I have problems with my skin.
What shall I do?
Because your skin is continually
exposed to the elements, skin problems occur pretty often. In fact, according to
the U.S. Center for Disease Control, there were over 30 million office visits to
dermatologists in the year 2002 alone. The good news is that you can easily treat
most common skin problems.
The most common skin problem you can get is called eczema or atopic dermatitis. Eczema
causes an itchy rash or a discoloration of your skin. In adults, it generally appears
on the face, scalp, neck, or on the folds of knees and elbows. Eczema is a reaction
to things such as stress, sweating, temperature changes, detergents, oils, or environmental
allergens. Aside from eczema, there are many other common skin problems such as acne,
hives, and cold sores, which are often characterized by bumps, lesions or blisters
that appear on the skin.
The treatment of these ailments is fairly simple and often can be done on your own.
To treat eczema, keep the affected area hydrated and use ointments to soothe irritation.
For most other common problems, over-the-counter medications are effective. You should
seek medical attention if the problem persists, the area looks infected, or you cannot
identify the problem.
